The LIFE4ZOO project has developed WaterSave+, a smart water recirculation system for city zoos combining a constructed wetland (nature-based pre-treatment), ultrafiltration unit, and solar-powered recirculation circuit. The system is operational at Zoo Liberec (CZ) and Zoo Barcelona (ES), enabling reuse of treated wastewater from animal enclosures for non-potable purposes and reducing dependence on drinking water by up to 50%. The FIT4USE concept – treating water only to the quality required for its intended use – is transferable to other zoos and water-intensive public facilities across Europe. Partners and pilot hosts are sought for further replication.
